How to get a hiking permit in Selangor

Several Selangor hikes sit inside permanent forest reserves, and you need a permit before you go. Some also need a licensed forest mountain guide (MGP). Permits are issued online through SEFOREST, the Selangor State Forestry Department's permit system. These are the steps Kay followed for Broga Hill.

Step by step

Register a SEFOREST account
Go to forestry.selangor.gov.my/permit, the Selangor State Forestry Department's online permit system, and register. The site has English and Bahasa Malaysia.
Apply for your hike
Log in and apply for a permit for the trail, your hike date and everyone in your group.
Pay the fee
RM5 per person. That is what Kay paid for Broga Hill, and the Forestry Department lists the same fee for Selangor hiking areas. Check the amount SEFOREST shows when you apply.
Download the permit
The approved permit comes as a PDF.
Print it out
Bring a printed copy with you on the day. A photo on your phone is not the same thing.
Hand it in at the police station
On hike day, before you start, hand the printed permit to the police station nearest the hill. If anything happens on the trail, the police already know who is up there and can find you quickly.

Permit vs mountain guide (MGP)

Hikes inside a permanent forest reserve (Hutan Simpanan Kekal) can need two things:

Permit: permission to enter the forest reserve, applied for on SEFOREST.
MGP, or Malim Gunung Perhutanan (Forestry Mountain Guide, FMG, in English): a licensed forest mountain guide who hikes with your group.

The Forestry Department introduced MGPs to cut accident risk and give every group a first responder. One guide can take up to 7 hikers, so a group of 10 needs 2 guides. Where a state has adopted the rule, MGPs have been compulsory for the listed hikes since 1 January 2023. Each state's registered MGP name list is on forestry.gov.my.

In the department's fee table, Selangor hiking areas cost RM5 per person, and district forestry offices handle the permits: PHD Hulu Selangor, PHD Selangor Tengah and PHD Pantai Klang.

Other trails on this site

Sungai Pisang Waterfall (Air Terjun Sungai Pisang) is also in the department's fee table at RM5 per person. Jeram Perlus is marked permit required on this site from Kay's own hike, but it is not named on the official list. Gunung Alai in Perak needs both a permit and an MGP on the official list, handled by Perak's forestry office rather than SEFOREST. Gunung Kerunai (Perak) and Ketumbar Hill (Kuala Lumpur) are marked permit required here too. Check locally for those.

They need a permit as well.

How many hikers can one MGP guide take?

Up to 7. The Forestry Department set a ratio of 1 guide to 7 hikers, so a group of 8 to 14 needs 2 guides.

Does SEFOREST cover trails outside Selangor?

No. SEFOREST handles Selangor. Hikes in other states, such as Gunung Alai in Perak, go through that state's forestry office. Check with them directly.
