My First Time in Langkawi — 4 Days of Island, Culture & Heritage

Kampung food, batik & honey straight from the nest

First stop was lunch at Dangau Langkawi — authentic Malay kampung food eaten right beside a paddy field, with live traditional music playing. What a way to start.

Then we visited the Langkawi Craft Complex to try our hand at batik colouring, before heading to a Kelulut (stingless bee) honey farm, where we sucked the honey directly out of the nest. The flavour was surprisingly tangy — such an interesting experience, haha.

We checked in at Langkawi Country Lodge, our home for the whole trip, and even received a goodie bag of merchandise from Tourism Malaysia Langkawi to bring home. Later we dropped by Art Case Langkawi, where the owner and family treated us to homemade nasi lemak that tasted like childhood, and gave us customised art plates. Dinner was fresh seafood by the sea at Fish Farm Restaurant — cooked Chinese-style and really, really good.

Dayang Bunting, Beras Basah & a village feast

After a traditional breakfast, we boarded a boat for the classic Langkawi island hopping trip.

First: Pulau Dayang Bunting — the second-largest island in Langkawi, famous for Tasik Dayang Bunting (the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), a natural freshwater lake ringed by limestone hills that's shaped like a reclining pregnant woman. You can kayak on the lake and see the "miracle border" where freshwater meets the sea.

Next: Pulau Beras Basah, a laid-back island with powder-white sand and crystal-clear water. We swam here — the sea was so blue and clean it didn't feel real.

Lunch was Malay food at Rumah Makan Jebat (they even showed us their homestay), then back to Langkawi Country Lodge. In the evening the owner kindly showed us "merewang" — the communal cooking that prepares food for a traditional village feast. For dinner we dressed in traditional wear: Baju Kurung Kedah with batik for the ladies, Baju Pagoda with kain pelikat for the men. My first time wearing it — a genuinely unique experience, with beautiful live Malay music and a feast the owner prepared for us.

SkyCab, the Eagle's Nest SkyBridge & a hidden bat cave

After breakfast we headed to the Langkawi SkyCab cable car and the Eagle's Nest SkyBridge at Panorama Langkawi. Riding the cable car up and walking out onto the transparent skydeck was such a fun (and slightly scary) experience — you can see Gunung Raya, the highest peak on the island, and even catch the Telaga Tujuh (Seven Wells) waterfall on the way up.

Lunch was at a Crab Farm Restaurant. The crab looked amazing but I couldn't eat it — the team kindly prepared other food for me, which I really appreciated.

Then we explored the Kubang Badak BioGeoTrail by boat — visiting the historic charcoal kiln site, Gua Pinang cave, and Pulau Jemuruk. The guide's storytelling about the area's history and geology was excellent. Finally, the most fun part: ATV adventure through Ayer Hangat. It had been ages since I last rode an ATV, and doing it in Langkawi was a blast. Dinner was at a famous local Western burger spot that the locals clearly love.

Eagle Square & the ferry home

On our last day we visited Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) to see the freshly repainted, larger-than-life eagle statue — the icon of Langkawi. We squeezed in some last-minute souvenir shopping, then boarded the ferry back to Kuala Perlis and rode the bus home to KL.
